Evolution of Smart Cities
Strelka KB experts on the evolution of the ‘smart city’ concept and the many efforts to create them
Technologies are constantly evolving, and the concept of a smart city is getting more and more complicated. Today, there are already several generations of smart cities: while the ones from 2000s implied the use of sensors and big data, the modern ones are based on AI and remote infrastructure management. Which model should be developed in Russia? Are we prepared enough for the smart cities? And how can citizens participate in this process?
Experts from Strelka KB will explain how the ‘smart city’ concept has changed over the past decades and will talk about existing technologies that are already used in urban life. In their lecture, they will cover multiple projects related to both greenfield smart cities built from scratch and the integration of such technology into existing cities and neighbours. What were the mistakes and what conclusions can be drawn?
The speakers will also reflect on public concerns about data collection, privacy and surveillance alongside uncertainties about the often opaque relationships between governments and private companies, and the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed technologies.
Strelka KB is a consulting company with an interest in the city as an integrated system. The company offers strategic consulting, urban planning and project management services. Its structure includes centres for urban anthropology, economics, GIS-analysis, communications and design.
Speakers:
— Maxim Isaev, Director of Digital Products in Strelka KB. He is responsible for developing new technology-based decisions for cities. Maxim launched crowdsourcing platforms моногорода.рф (development project for Russian mono-cities), Чего хочет Свободный (‘What Svobodny wants’) и Ташкент любит тебя» (‘Tashkent loves you’). These projects helped create new public spaces taking into account community demands;
Christopher Burman, Co-Director of Urban Strategy in Strelka KB. Alumnus of The New Normal programme at Strelka Institute (2017/18). In the years 2008-2011, he played a key role in launching Pachube (aka Xively), a platform for storing and sharing sensor data and connecting IOT devices acquired by Google in 2018, for which he was also nominated for a Design of the Year award by Design Museum. He is a member of STORE, a London-based association of artists, architects and designers;
Tom Pearson, Co-Director of Urban Strategy in Strelka KB. Alumnus of The New Normal programme at Strelka Institute (2017/18). Tom worked with IKEA, Kinesensor, MonitorMe and many other companies as a data expert. He is an artist and designer from London.
